Lys Lin

LCMHCA

Lys Lin (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate who earned a master’s in clinical mental health counseling from North Carolina State University and a master’s in human development from the University of Pennsylvania. She has over a decade of experience acting as a mentor and teacher for middle and high school girls, taught intercultural competence for four years in a university setting, and previously provided counseling in a public health department setting.

In her own experience as a Taiwanese woman and as a teacher of intercultural competence, Lys experienced and witnessed silencing of marginalized individuals, leading to shutting down within oneself. While working as a teacher, Lys learned that she is not the only person in the room that holds the truth. As a mentor, she uncovered a passion for listening to people’s stories, regardless of difference in belief or opinion. Lys believes that multiple truths exist within one room and even within one person. These experiences have informed Lys’ work with immigrants and their families regarding visa stress and fear, generational challenges, identity integration, and developing a sense of belonging.

In her work with clients, Lys not only focuses on the individual, but also the reflexive interaction between the client and their world. Taking a feminist approach, she seeks to empower clients by recognizing that social location affects mental health. Based on each client’s needs and journey, she incorporates elements of existential and internal family systems approaches, and is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy) trained. Lys believes that a client’s focus on meaning and purpose can offer long-term solutions to day-to-day problems. Knowing that each individual is comprised of many parts, Lys supports clients to embrace various aspects of self, thereby increasing self-compassion and acceptance. In session, Lys offers the opportunity to slow down, work in-depth, and identify their own authentic voice in order to improve overall wellness.

Lys works with adult and adolescent clients focusing on a variety of presenting concerns including bicultural identity, divorce, domestic violence, childhood trauma, life transitions, and perinatal/pregnancy/postpartum matters. As someone who taught in all-girls middle and high schools for eight years, Lys is passionate about exploring gender roles and expectations. Lys loves to serve, share common experiences, and celebrate culture and identity with fellow members of the AAPI community. She is also fluent in Mandarin. Lys also works with couples and families to hold space for the specific difficulties of intercultural relationships.
