Mariam Al-Akhdar

LCMHCA

Mariam Al-Akhdar (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate with a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from North Carolina State University. With over six years of experience in the mental health field, Mariam has served as a crisis line volunteer and medical advocate at a local domestic violence center. Her diverse background includes working with clients dealing with Autism and ADHD, trauma, anxiety and identity-related issues.

Mariam identifies as a gender fluid pansexual woman who grew up in a bicultural, biracial, and bireligious environment. Her father is Arab Muslim, and her mother is Italian Catholic. Living with Autism and ADHD has shaped her perspective, and she identifies as a Spoonie. These experiences have underscored for her the importance of a grounded and confident identity in achieving happiness and a sense of belonging. She deeply understands the multifaceted challenges that neurodivergence can present socially, professionally, romantically, and within family systems, as well as its impact on self-expression and self-esteem. Her personal journey has ignited her passion for guiding others through their own processes of self-discovery and self-actualization.

Mariam embraces an eclectic theoretical approach in her counseling practice, believing that each person is unique. She incorporates techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which focuses on identifying core values and beliefs central to the therapeutic process, and employs strategies for managing negative thoughts and sensations through radical acceptance. Additionally, she integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Feminist Theory and solution-focused therapy to address and process issues as they arise.

Mariam provides support to clients ranging from ages 18 to 55, including those with Autism or suspected Autism, ADHD, LGBTQIA2S+ identities, and bicultural or biracial backgrounds. Her aim is to help individuals navigate their unique challenges, foster self-discovery, and build a confident sense of self and belonging.
