Tamia Corbett
Tamia Corbett (she/her) is an intern who has earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a minor in African American Studies. She is currently pursuing her master’s at East Carolina University to be a clinical mental health counselor. Her experience is in working with children in preschool, elementary, and middle school settings. While teaching middle school, she has helped children practice mindfulness and verbalizing their emotions.
As an African American who grew up in a low-income, single-parent household, she has always been keenly aware of the behaviors and struggles of those around her. This sensitivity sparked her desire to help others, particularly in navigating life’s challenges. She is deeply passionate about counseling because it empowers individuals with the tools they need to cope with their experiences, ultimately fostering personal growth and healing. With a deep commitment to mental health advocacy, Tamia aims to support children and adults facing mental health disorders, helping them gain awareness, build resilience, and move toward a brighter future.
She integrates person-centered, cognitive behavioral, and behavioral theories in her practice. The person-centered approach will serve as the core framework for her sessions, emphasizing self-actualization and the importance of the client-counselor relationship, ensuring that the client’s needs are always prioritized. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps identify and address negative thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, depression, and other emotional or physical symptoms, guiding clients toward healing. She also incorporates behavior theory, which is clear, structured, and evaluative, focusing on the influence of the environment on behavior. These models are collaborative, requiring effort from both counselor and client, and they aim to foster long-term progress by rewiring thought patterns and improving coping strategies.
Tamia is open to working with clients of all ages and strives to create a warm, empathetic environment where individuals feel comfortable and supported. Her approach is centered around understanding and addressing the unique challenges each client faces, particularly those experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and difficulties with family dynamics. She believes in promoting a collaborative, non-judgmental space where clients can explore their emotions and work toward healing. With a focus on compassion and respect, Tamia is committed to helping individuals navigate their struggles and find positive paths forward.
